Montaña snares crown

THE DREAM has become a reality for Montaña Pawnshop. Relegated mostly to the sidelines the past seven years, Montaña finally hit paydirt last night when the Jewels outshone Welcoat Paints, 79-65, to nail their first Philippine Basketball League (PBL) crown — the Open Championship — at the Makati Coliseum.

"I am really proud of my players," said the triumphant and a teary-eyed Montaña taskmaster Robert Sison.

Shamed in Game Four, Montaña did not give Welcoat the opportunity to impose its will in Game 5 as the Jewels zoomed to a 22-11 first quarter lead behind the eight points of Erick dela Cuesta and another eight combined from Jondan Salvador and Froilan Baguion.

While the Paint Masters managed to come to within striking distance at the end of the first 20 minutes of play, 31-38, the Jewels kept them at bay as Alex Compton banged in 10 of Montaña’s 21 third-quarter points, including back-to-back triples at the height of Welcoat’s uprising, 6:20 remaining before the end of the third.

Compton was ably assisted in that quarter by the wide-bodied Ariel Capus, who struck for five points, including a trey that gave the Jewels a 57-41 edge.

The last time Welcoat threatened was early in the fourth frame when Leo Najorda, the standout of the San Sebastian Stags in the NCAA, strung up seven straight markers to cut the deficit to 53-59, 8:46 to go.

It was at this time when the mercurial Baguion exhibited his court generalship and scoring skills alongside Compton and Capus to give Sison that distinct look in his face.

Welcoat’s dismal showing was made even worse by the lackluster performance of its big man, Fil-Am Anthony Washington, who wound up with just two points in 21 minutes of play.

Compton was four-of-eight from downtown and led the way with 26 points, six rebounds and six assists in 33 minutes of action, while Baguion chipped in 13, four feeds and three steals.

Najorda led Welcoat’s with 20 markers while Ryan Dy added 13.

Before being crowned last night, Montaña’s finest accomplishment in its seven-year participation in the PBL was a third place finish in 2001 and it was known as a team that never went past the elimination round.
