TWO NATIONAL amateur champions will take the challenge of a talented cast of qualifiers as they determine who’s the best of the best in the grand finals of the Samsung Amateur Tour at the windswept Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Lipa, Batangas, on Feb. 12-16.
This year’s finale promises to be the most exciting in years as Jayvie Agojo, who pulled off an exciting win in last month’s Philippine Ladies Open at Manila Golf, and Jun Bernis, the reigning Philippine men’s amateur champion, are both in the sitio field.
In the men’s division, Bernie is set for a tough outing against former nationale Boyet Saragoza, and Jay Bayron as well Raymund Sangil and Korean ace Kim Chang Hoi with Pagunsan a doubtful entry because of a prior commitment.
The short series will also put the pressure on Agojo. She battles the likes of former national players Aileen Yao, Millet Villaroman and Lina de Guzman in the ladies Class A of the tourney which also has Philippines Airlines as the official airline, Tokyo Tokyo, which also has Philippines Airlines as the official airline, Tokyo Tokyo, C-Lium Fiber, Gatorade, Adidas Taylor Made, KZG by Customs Clubmakers, Pink Patio Boracay, Coppertone Sport, and Rogin-E as its other sponsors, Killer-Bee, Jam 88.3, Wave 89.1, Magic 89.9, 99.5 RT and 103.5 K-Lite are media partners.
"This is going to be a very interesting showdown as it involves all the best the country’s pool of talents has to offer,’’ said Boy Blue Ocampo of the organizing Professional Sports Management Group.
Mt. Malarayat, site of the coming Philippine Open, remains one of the most challenging local courses which requires consistency, all throughout. Malarayat’s long fairways, tough greens, and plenty of hazards will require players to put most of the 14 clubs in their bag to good use.
