As the Philippine government continues to pursue for the additional Value Added Tax (VAT) on all basic needs, most sectors in society are appealing to Malacañang to totally "scrap" the proposal. But President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said that it is needed to improve the economy.

Senate approves P907.35-B national budget for 2005
The Senate approved on third and final reading last night a more conservative national budget totalling P907.35 billion, which finance committee chairman Sen. Manuel Villar said is designed to enhance the government’s belt-tightening and antigraft campaigns.
