International Women’s Day on March 8 is celebrated around the world by women whose achievements have sought and are seeking equality and empowerment. In the Philippines, stark heroines such as Gabriela Silang are honored as well as the vast population of mothers and sisters who helped the shaping of the nation’s identity, families and future.


I just got my hands on a copy of Carpool, Syeri Baet’s first book. Carpool is a compilation of comic strips about a group of friends who regularly hitch a ride with a member who has a car.


Communications expert Elizabeth Lorenzana Diaz retired from teaching at the University of the Philippines in October but she and her colleagues know that her work is far from entering twilight zone. She continues to speak, breath and dream about public broadcasting. Her decades, literally, of scouring the earth for sparks of what could be the advent of a genuine public service broadcasting system (PBS) in the Philippines never met dead end so she is constantly energized to push the concept to fruition.
