UPS bets on new technology innovations for improved service

US-based delivery service company UPS is counting on the $15 billion in total investments it poured in the last 15 years for technology-related innovations to pay off in the form of satisfied customers.

In a recent seminar showcasing its latest Web-based and wireless distribution shipping solutions, UPS Philippines country manager Gilliam Sim said the company invested the money for the convenience of customers but is not passing this cost on them.

"We have instituted all these innovations for the primary satisfaction of our customers and we hope that they will use them to make their transactions easier and better," Sim said.

UPS.com, the website of the based delivery firm, averages 145 million hits per day, including 10 million daily online tracking requests. At its data centers in Mahwah, New Jersey and Atlanta, Georgia, the company employs 14 mainframe computers, 2,884 mid-range computers, 125,000 PCs, and 6,100 servers.

In its website, the company has introduced a new functionality called UPS OnLine Tools, which provide a variety of options for customers to customize and transform their e-commerce and enterprise environments.

Among its features include a signature tracking tool that obtains a proof of delivery information including a digitized signature and delivery address and a tracking tool that provides up-to-the-minute package status to customers.

UPS has also adopted wireless solutions which allow customers to access company applications wherever they are to get vital shipping and tracking information.

Foremost among these solutions is the SMS Tracking, a new service that enables customers to send tracking requests and receive shipment status via SMS or text messages on their mobile phones. Users of this service will have to register first with UPS either through the Web or their cellphones.

For businesses, UPS is offering a solution called CampusShip, a Web-based UPS-hosted shipping system that allows employees to ship their own packages and letters from any desktop even as the management maintains overall control of shipping activities.

Under this solution, the organization can assign a company administrator who will be able to customize CampusShip to match their unique business needs.

CampusShip also allows administrators to query, sort, and export shipment records.

UPS has a huge presence in Asia Pacific, maintaining air hubs in Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Clark Air Base in Pampanga. In 2004, the company generated $36.6 billion in total revenues through a delivery volume of 3.6 billion packages and documents.
