Trekkers told to stay away from Mt. Kanlaon

BACOLOD CITY — The Provincial Disaster Management Team (PDMT) has issued a directive prohibiting hikers, trekkers and tourists from going anywhere near Mt. Kanlaon, which has been showing signs of activity since the Holy Week.

"The volcano might erupt anytime. It can be very dangerous to go near Mt. Kanlaon so we are enforcing a directive banning trekkers and hikers in the area. We will impose sanctions to all violators," Vicfran Defante, PDMT head, warned

During the Holy Week, faith healers who visited Mt. Kanlaon’s crater and Harden sang Balo Lagoon, one of the many lagoons popular to visitors during the Lenten season, were requested for safety reasons to stay away from the mountain.

The Mt. Kanlaon Green Brigade members have been tasked to guard the three main entrances to the 2,465-meter mountain — the Wasay entrance in Murcia, Mananawin entrance in Canlaon City and the Guintubdan entrance in La Carlota City.

Mt. Kanlaon, the highest mountain in Central Philippines, is one of the 13 most active volcanoes in the country.
