I’m 45 years old but I still played basketball regularly until three months ago when I twisted my left knee. The knee became swollen and for a few days I experienced pain in the knee whenever I walked. I consulted an orthopedic surgeon and he ordered MRI examination of the knee. He told me that I tore a cartilage in my knee and that I need an operation. I’m afraid of surgery so I just rested my knee. Luckily, the pain and the swelling have already subsided. Do I still need to have an operation? Is it not possible for the cartilage to heal on its own? — Jun E., Manila.
