Arroyo declares period of national mourning
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo joined yesterday the rest of the Catholic faithful all over the world in grieving over the passing away of Pope John Paul II and declared a period of national mourning until the Pontiff is laid to his final resting place.

POPE JOHN PAUL II LIES IN STATE (AFP)
Vatican and Italian officials begin filing past the body of Pope John Paul II to pay their last respects. Among the first dignitaries to do so was Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, followed by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and members of the Italian cabinet. The Pope’s body was lying in state in the Clementine Room of the Apostolic Palace.
