Ong leads finalists in EuroMed-Storm tilt

   

BUSAN ASIAN Games quadruple gold medalist Remy Ong of Singapore bowled a 2287 series yesterday to lead seven others into the finals of the 3rd EuroMed-Storm International Masters Challenge at the Pearl Bowling Center.

The 27-year-old Ong, winner of the all-events, singles, trios and masters gold in the 2002 Busan Games, had lines of 237, 197, 201, 211, 216, 277, 215, 227, 244 and 262 to finish nine pins ahead of Asian Bowler of the Year Shalin Zulkifli.

Zulkifli, the 2002 Asian Games masters champion and winner of the Emir Cup last February, tallied 2278 on lines of 249, 213, 247, 199, 267, 225, 213, 182, 220 and 183, while trailing by 51 pins at third was Taiwanese Cheng Chao Sheng, who tallied 2236 (204, 225, 206, 238, 254, 215, 209, 213, 256 and 216).

Lim Zhong, also from Singapore, placed fourth when he amassed 2213 pinfalls on lines of 224, 244, 198, 268, 269, 187, 207, 183, 245 and 188 followed by Finland’s Lasse Lintila, who tallied 2195 on lines of 218, 178, 218, 235, 214, 242, 215, 257, 216 and 202.

Cecilia Yap and Chester King, both from PBAP-Bowlmart, were the only Filipinos left in the finals of this tournament offering R1 million to the champion.

Yap, a veteran of international tournaments, settled for sixth place when she tallied 2179 on lines of 206, 203, 205, 229, 181, 235, 204, 214, 222 and 200 while King, the 2002 Busan Asian Games doubles gold medalist and Hong Masters Cup champion, was seventh with 2177 (194, 290, 247, 223, 174, 233, 210, 216, 203 and 187).

The eighth and last qualifier was Korean Kweon Hyeok Young, who bowled 2160 including a perfect game in the fifth frame.

The eight bowlers will play 10 games today with the top four advancing into the step-ladder finals. This event is sanctioned by the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) and Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) with support from Euro-Med Laboratories, makers of Bevida Distilled Drinking Water, Storm Products, Inc., Manila Hotel, Wave Products, Manila Bulletin, Pagcor, and Kegel Asia, the official lane maintenance partner.
