Brain injury survivors gather for 1st summit

Brain injury survivors and their families area invited to attend "We Care: The First Philippine Brain Injury Summit" to be held on April 23, at the New Medical City along Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City.

This summit will be the first of what the organizers envision to be an annual gathering of brain injury survivors and their families in order to create a support community, and build a future that provides better care for the people with brain injuries.

Because of advances in modern medicine, more and more people today, survive devastating brain injuries as a result of traumatic accidents, heart attacks, anesthesia accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning, drowning, massive strokes, etc. However, the prospects of recovery for such severe brain damaged individuals remain grim.

The condition is usually permanent and irreversible, often leaving survivors with multiple disabilities. And after hospital discharge, families are left on their own to care for their brain injured loved ones without any kind of organized support or guidance.

The brain injured are perhaps one of the most neglected sectors of society today. They are defenseless and voiceless. And thus there is a need to set up an organization that endeavors to look after the health, well-being, dignity and rights of people with brain injuries. By looking after the dignity and rights of our weakest members, we safeguard our own dignity and rights.
