A chair is a work of art

THERE is no denying that Kish, a lifestyle home store located in the posh neighborhood of Greenbelt 3 in Ayala Center, always rivets the attention of people passing by with their collection of colorful furniture designed for modern homes and offices.

For their latest collections, Kish offers iconic furniture that represent a wonderfully lush and luxurious kind of lifestyle, and a piece of design history.

Take, for example, the White Chaise lounge chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, who were considered among the most important American designers of the 20th century and famed especially during the 1940’s and 1950’s, when their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design and manufacturing, and the photographic arts, were noticed by the American public as well as the rest of the world.

Primarily made by Swiss-based furniture maker Vitra, an internationally-known furniture manufacturer that has worked with almost every major designer since the 1950s to the present, the Chaise chair is a true work of art that is distinctly Eames. Made out of polypropylene resin, it has a fixed fiberglass structure, with chrome-plated steel frames underneath and a natural solid oak wood at its base.

The story goes something like this: there were other items in the Eames collection, particularly the chairs, under the plywood group, which used bent plywood. Bending plywood proved to be quite difficult because they splinter, especially when bent in acute angles. Facing this rather daunting challenge, the Eameses and their colleagues cut slits and an assortment of holes into these experimental chair shells. It worked, and as a result, they created truly stylish-looking works.

Other furniture in the Kish collection also include those designed by Moroso, a firm based in Italy that specializes in upholstered furniture, with creative designs coming from well-known designers like Carlo Colombo, Enrico Franzolini, Marc Newson, Toshiyuki Kita and Patricia Urquiola. This set offers a much younger perspective, since the designs were conceptualized during the ‘90s up to the turn of the century. They all elicit a comfortable feel, coupled with a striking, modern look.

The patterns, according to Erik Posadas, Kish’s operations supervisor, are basically all about curves, where the designers used modern approaches and methods for the furniture, highlighted by the use of injected polypropylene, which gave them a totally different look.

For the past three years, Kish has remained true to its vision of providing unique furnishings, both small and large pieces, for the modern Filipino home and office. Kish, which opened in 2002, continues to draw in people with the most distinctive tastes in home and office furniture.

"We at Kish will continue to inspire homemakers when designing their homes," says Erik. "Our items are from some of the best designers both here and abroad, and can serve as a great source of inspiration for anyone who does interior design. I think people deserve no less."
