Construction boom seen in Manila this year

City Hall projected a construction boom in Manila this year with applications for building permits rising by 21 percent compared with the same period last year.

In a report submitted to Manila Mayor Jose Atienza Jr., City Building Official Saturnino Disu said as many as 317 applications for new construction were approved from January to April this year. This was higher than last year’s 263 permits issued on the same period, or an increase of 54 building permits for new construction.

"We give credit to the trust and confidence of investors in the positive growth the city is likely to achieve this year," Atienza said.

Since the start of the Atienza administration in 1998, building permit applications have steadily risen, indicating a boom in infrastructure investments.

"This manifestation of investors’ confidence doing business in Manila will only strengthen our resolve to ensure a more improved business climate for them (investors) and our city residents," Atienza said.

In turn, the increased revenue will be used to fund new projects that will further improve the delivery of public services in Manila.
