The commander of US military forces in the Pacific will visit the Philippines next week for annual security talks, an Armed Forces spokesman said yesterday.

Admiral William Fallon will be leading the US delegation in the annual Mutual Defense Board meeting with the Philippines on June 7-8 in Manila.

Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual, a spokesman for the Armed Forces, said Fallon was tentatively scheduled to arrive in Manila on June 1.

"The meeting will serve as a venue to discuss security issues of mutual concern, finalize the planning and reviewing of all bilateral activities and programs," he said.

The two sides would also sign various documents on such topics as planned joint activities in 2005, a five-year plan, and rules of engagement, Pascual added. (DPA)

DENR leads observance of May as ‘Month of Ocean’

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will once again lead the nation in the observance of May as "Month of the Ocean."

With the theme, "Ensuring the Sustainable Use and Management of the Philippine Coastal Zone," the celebration will be highlighted by activities that seek to enhance public consciousness to conserve, protect, and manage coasts and oceans surrounding the Philippines.

The Philippines is an archipelago with an abundant coastline, stretching up to 36,289 kilometers. Its vast coastal and marine resources include critical habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and a diverse marine flora and fauna

DENR Secretary Michael T. Defensor said that the celebration of May as Month of the Ocean affords every Filipino to become aware of the importance of the many bodies of water and the marine resources that thrive therein that continually provide not only food but also livelihood to many Filipinos.

According to Defensor, about 70 percent of the country’s municipalities are located in coastal areas. He also said that coastal fishing activities contribute about 60 percent of the country’s fish catch, and the fisheries sector employs over a million Filipinos. (Monica T. Macariola)

Catholic Church celebrates feast day of reformist Pope

The Roman Catholic Church commemorates the feast day of one of the greatest of the Roman Pontiffs and one of the most remarkable men of all times (New Advent), Pope St. Gregory VII, with eucharistic celebrations.

Baptized with the name Hildebrand, which, according to his contemporaries, signified "a bright flame," he was elected Pope by acclamation in 1073 at the young age of 45. He took the name of Gregory VII in honor of St. Gregory the Great.

At once, he instituted vigorous reforms in the Universal Church that he was known as the greatest reformer of the Medieval congregation and the most fearless exponent of Church reform.

Among his many decrees, Pope Gregory VII declared that clerics who had obtained any grade or office of sacred order by payment should cease to minister in the Church.

He also prohibited the buying or selling of ecclesiastical rights. Clerics who were found guilty of incontinence were prohibited to exercise their sacred ministry. He also advised the faithful to reject ministrations of clerics who failed to obey the injunctions. (Christina I. Hermoso)

He has encouraged his district engineers to deliver effective infrastructure services to the people in their areas, saying "it is our duty to perform honestly and with transparency, our commitment to serve the public should be a task we must achieve." (Fa A. Ibrahim)
