LUZON

Man shot dead by his son

AMADEO, Cavite — A 54-year-old carpenter was shot dead by his son while he was preparing breakfast in their house in barangay Maymangga, this town last Monday. Police identified the suspect as Redentor Magnaye, alias "Boy Pana," who is said to be in the list of most wanted persons in Tagaytay City. Investigation conducted by SPO1 Rizalito Salazar showed that the victim was busy preparing his breakfast when his son arrived and, without any word, shot him repeatedly in the body. Their neighbors told police investigators that a night before the killing, the man and his son had an altercation over the latter’s pending criminal case before the Tagaytay City court. Redentor reportedly got irked when his father reprimanded him for his alleged criminal activities and urged him to turn a new leaf. Police said this could be the motive why Redentor killed his father. Meanwhile, an unidentified man shot and killed a drug addict who allegedly challenged his neighbors to a fight in barangay Maliksi, Bacoor. Police said Gabby Felizardo, 22, was high on drugs when he created trouble in the neighborhood at about 5:30 a.m. (Del Villanueva)

Woman hits coffin with stones

CEBU CITY — A 53-year-old wife created a scene when she arrived at her husband’s wake at sitio Lawis, barangay Lorega, this city Monday night and suddenly struck the coffin with stones. Lolita Bargo, who was allegedly drunk, was controlled only when policemen arrived. Her son, Roy, called up the police to arrest her. Roy also alleged that her mother had something to do with the death of his 74-year-old father, noting the contusions and bruises in the body of the man who was paralytic. Roy said his parents separated several years ago but her mother went back to their house a few weeks ago to again live with his father. But the victim was taken to the hospital last week due to contusions and bruises in the body. He died in the hospital after two days. Witnesses said they saw Lolita hitting the victim with a piece of wood. Learning of the incident, homicide police chief Mario Monilar said he will send a team of investigators to determine the involvement of Lolita in the death of her husband. (Mars Mosqueda Jr.)

MINDANAO

Most wanted man nabbed

COTABATO CITY — Police and Army operatives in Sultan Kudarat arrested last week one of the province’s most wanted criminals, Lou Usman, long hunted for murder and frustrated murder cases in Central Mindanao. He is also the most wanted criminal in Palembang, a coastal town in Sultan Kudarat. Provincial police chief Paniares Adap said the arrest of Usman came as a result of "an intensified manhunt and surveillance." Usman was collared last May 17 in his hideout in barangay Kanipa-an, a remote village in Palembang. A certain Mama Onting, believed to be a relative of Usman, owns the house. Police Intelligence officer Crisostomo Sularte of Sultan Kudarat Police and 64th Infantry Battalion company commander 2nd Lt. Domingo Reyes led the two-day surveillance that led to the arrest of Usman. Last May 15, Sularte and his team members went to Palembang town to verify reports that Usman was seen roaming around barangay Kanipa-an. They coordinated the operations against Usman with 2nd Lt. Reyes who was stationed at barangay Milbuk, a few kilometers away from Kanipa-an, and with Inspector Norberto Durias, chief of the Palembang police. (Malu Manar)
