Mobile Mail in Real Time

A new software package from Siemens makes it possible to pick up e-mails while out on the road with your current electronic appointment diary. In contrast to other systems such as the BlackBerry — which is much loved by managers worldwide — users of the new office @vantage package can also receive, edit and forward e-mail attachments. The mails are received on the office PC and, in parallel, on the mobile terminal. The system from Siemens Communications works in all mobile radio networks and with WLAN and is also ready for use with the mobile high-speed data service HSDPA. When it comes to downloading data, this new transmission standard can in theory deliver a maximum transmission rate of 14.4 megabits per second.

Siemens supplies operators with a system that matches almost every PDA, smartphone or notebook that complies with OMA (Open Mobile Alliance). OMA is an open industry standard that most of today’s equipment conforms to. The Swiss mobile radio operator Sunrise and the Luxemburg-based operator VOXmobile are already offering this solution to their subscribers. Depending on requirements, companies can save up to 30 percent compared with platforms from other operators. The users have their e-mails, calendar appointments, contacts and tasks completely synchronized on their office PC and their mobile terminal. According to a study by market researchers from the Gartner company, every employee saves an average of 53 minutes per day thanks to such a solution. VOXmobile customers can keep their costs for the service under control, because they can set a limit to the data transfer volume at any time. Siemens also ensures the security of the system: All transport paths and data are encoded up to three times, and e-mails are checked for spam and viruses.
