Clad in mod ‘60s garb and armed with no less than Rickenbackers for that authentic Beatles sound (The Rickenbackers are favorites of Lennon and McCartney), The Bloomfields are reminiscent of early Fab Four circa the Ed Sullivan Show. With more than talent and showmanship tucked under their belts, this quintet has taken the best of an era musicology declares as the cornerstone of modern rock and made it their own.
Engineering students by day and rockers by night, these self-confessed music junkies’ reverence for ‘50s and ‘60s music is unparalleled. Their passion for classic rock and roll stems from a stout admiration for brilliant musicians who lived to play "happy music," as they like to call it. The enduring quality of catchy, dreamy, happy-clappy music clearly resonates with them as these are the selections they choose to play. "Everyone is so antsy nowadays, and we want to be different, so it’s happy music that we like and it’s what we sing," they merrily quip, alluding no doubt to living out an era well-loved but long gone, a time when people followed their dreams sans the worries, when rock and roll was at its finest and purest.
They’re certainly quite a resplendent sight to behold as they present impressive covers of The Ventures, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Shadows, Dave Clark 5, Cliff Richard, Chris Montes and other rock and roll legends. But they are no merely capable ‘60s showband. More than a deeply-rooted passion for ‘60s music, they have distilled the music of this era to come up with original songs, like "We Get Along," which is resonantly rolling with that ‘60s vibe.
The Bloomfields are JJ Lozano (20, on lead guitar), Louie Poco (19, on bass), Pepe Lozano (21, on electric guitar), Lakan Hila (21, on piano/organ/keyboards) and Rocky Collado (19, on drums). Happy dispositions apparent, they are fascinating to watch, for young and old alike, their innocence and charm disarming and infectious.
On any wan gimik night, let The Bloomfields hold your hand and take you on that magical mystery tour. Back to a time when bangs and boogie were in, R and B were just letters of the alphabet, and people imagined heaven and gave peace a chance. Bop your heads, sing along and boogie-woogie all you want.
