Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. recently concluded the first leg of this year’s Xtra Amazing Fuel Eco Run, a fuel efficiency competition open to all Honda Jazz owners.
Honda, in cooperation with Petron, embarked on this fuel economy event to drum up awareness on efficient driving techniques in the face of spiraling gasoline costs.
The first of the four-leg series traversed a 53-kilometer stretch of highway driving using normal, day-to-day driving style. The Honda Jazz owners, joined by 14 journalists squeezed ‘amazing’ fuel mileage from the Honda Jazz.
A total of 19 customer teams and seven media teams competed in the event posting amazing results in fuel consumption garnering gas mileage of up to 32 kilometers per liter. Co-presented by Petron Xtra Unleaded Gas, this year’s Jazz CVT category winner is Leovin de Ramos posting 32.7160 km/li.
For the manual transmission category, William Catacutan topped the run with 30.6818 km/li.
For the media category, Manila Bulletin’s Aris Ilagan and Phil. Star’s Raymond Young registered 29.421 km/li using the 1.3 Honda City CVT while Sunshine TV’s Matt Mallari and Dianne Diwa posted fuel mileage of 30 km/li driving the 1.3 Honda Jazz CVT.
Asked how they were able to get the results, Jazz CVT category winner de Ramos shared: "We just drove at a maximum speed of 70 km/hr while keeping rpm between 2,000 to 2,500. I don’t know anything about cars since this is my first car and I’ve never owned a car before. It’s remarkable to know I only have to follow that simple technique to achieve more mileage."
A representative from the Automotive Association of Philippines (AAP) joined the event to set the official record and garnered 50 km/li on his Honda Jazz (manual transmission).
Participants gathered at the McDonald’s, The Fort in Makati at 6 a.m. on Sept. 10 to register. After securing the necessary materials, participants proceeded to Petron SLEX to fill-up their cars with Petron Xtra Unleaded gasoline. Fuel lid, hood, trunk and airconditioning dials were sealed by Honda officials to set uniform driving conditions.
With the airconditioning unit turned on, participants applied all permissible fuel-economizing techniques as they strive to achieve the least fuel consumption. Upon reaching Petron Star toll in Lipa, vehicles were refueled and consumption was computed. The AAP representative was on hand to attest the results.
Each winner was rewarded
P5,000 in cash and P5,000 worth of Petron gasoline including a free Honda Hydrophilic Paint job. The next legs are scheduled on Nov. 12, Jan. 14 and 28.
