Thais in sweep; Nationals 3rd

TEAM PHILIPPINES got a feel of Thailand’s awesome firepower as it fell to its second straight setback, 15-25, 18-25, 12-25, yesterday to finish third in the four-nation Shakey’s Invitational Volleyball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

A day after dropping a five-setter to the Indonesians, the Filipinos came into the game determined to give the Thais a tough fight but the reigning Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) champions’ proved just too powerful and talented for the hosts.

Thai captain Pleumjit Thinkaow played true to form and unleashed 20 hits — 14 on kills and five on serves — as the fancied squad, boasting of eight of their national team members, showed the Filipinos portents of things to come in the 23rd SEAG edition slated here next month.

In one stretch in the third set, Thinkaow, who represented her country 19 times in international meets including the prestigious World Grand Prix, came through with a barrage of powerful jump serves that the Filipinos failed to defend.

She’ll be back next month to lead the Thais, who thus swept the three-day event bankrolled by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by the Philippine Volleyball Federation with the Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. as event coordinator, for the biennial meet set Nov. 27 to Dec. 5 in Bacolod City.

"Malakas talaga sila," said RP team coach Ramil de Jesus, whose wards closed out with a 1-2 (win-loss) mark.

So dominating were the Thais that they finished the event without dropping a set, beating the Indons, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20, last Friday and trampling the Burmese, 25-6, 25-12, 25-15, Saturday.

Earlier, Indonesia leaned on its superb attacking game as it walloped Myanmar, 25-14, 25-15, 25-13, yesterday to finish second with a 2-1 mark.

Packing her shots with power, Nurjanah Siti torched the Burmese with 16 hits she laced with 14 kills as the Indonesians closed out their stint with two victories and a loss.
