Now on its third year, the Philippine Internet Commerce Society (PICS) will award Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that have effectively and efficiently utilized Information Technology (IT) and E-Business best practices in their business, and have gained benefits in terms of profitability, savings, efficiency, and customer and supplier relationship by doing so.
Small enterprises (with PhP3.1 million to PhP15 million in assets) and medium enterprises (with PhP15.1 million to PhP100 million in assets) in the Philippines are encouraged to participate. Nominations may be done online. Simply logon to http://www.donbosco.net/org/pics/awards and provide basic information such as name, brief description and e-mail address of the company being nominated. Recipients of the PICS SME IT Excellence Awards (the only one in the Philippines) will be honored during the staging of the 4th National E-Commerce Congress and Exhibit on October 25-26, 2005 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati City, themed “Who says the World is Round? Flattening the World through Technology.”
“Our Department of Trade and Industry recognizes SMEs as the backbone of Philippine economy, comprising about 99.6% of all registered firms nationwide,” Byron Guazon, IT Director of Don Bosco Technical College and awards committee chair, pointed out. Moreover, the SME sector employs 69.9% of the labor force, and contributes 32% to the economy.
Guazon further elaborates that “it is for this reason that PICS gives them importance. The organization would also like to encourage SMEs to make use of IT in their operations to improve their financial performance, customer orientation, effectiveness and efficiency of internal processes and their business’ ability to learn and grow.”
Incidentally, recognitions will be awarded for excellence in each of these four domains of what is known as the Balanced Scorecard (BSc). BSc is a recently developed strategic management system that will be used to evaluate the entries.
The National E-Commerce Congress and Exhibit is an annual PICS event. It is a two-day conference and exhibit discussing current global e-business trends and bringing technology to full use of small and medium enterprises in order to reach wider markets and do business globally.
Leading technology and software vendors, internet and web services providers, IT and Management consulting companies, mobile and wireless telecom companies, training institutes, software development companies, e-banking and financial institutions, content providers, and government agencies will showcase and demonstrate the latest wireless and mobile, internet, e-commerce and e-business solutions, technologies, and innovations at the exhibit floor.
