The Dream Team

Who would have thought that the day would come that we will see Windows Operating System running on a Sun machine? When we talk about Sun machines, the first thing that comes into mind is Solaris or Linux/Unix operating system. That no longer holds true with the recent announcement of Sun Microsystems AMD-64 Opteron servers. Sun Microsystems recently appointed WordText Systems Inc. (WSI) as its exclusive distributor for their Sun AMD-64 Opteron servers.

Sun Servers

The Sun Fire X2100 server is powered by a single or a dual-core AMD Opteron processor and is easy to scale, easy on the budget, and runs virtually any operating systems including the Solaris OS, Linux and Windows, permitting change over time without replacing your hardware.  It incorporates the new AMD Opteron 100 series into a sleek new design and delivers full 64-bit computing power and the ability to simultaneously run 32-bit applications without recompilation.  It uses AMD's HyperTransport Technology which  prevents CPU and memory gridlock by eliminating I/O performance bottlenecks. Instead of bandwidth and latency limitations, that usually drag down x64 performance, you get extra performance headroom for growth.

The Sun Fire X4100 server is powered by up to two dual-core or single-core AMD Opteron processors.  It provides four built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 64-bit high-speed PCI-X slots, providing high-performance I/O in a 1 RU form factor.  It also delivers automatic single-bit error correction for higher data integrity and continued system availability in case of a DRAM chip failure.  On the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) OMPM2001 benchmark, that is used to compare the performance of shared memory servers executing compute-intensive scientific applications, the Sun Fire X4100 server with two SINGLE-CORE AMD Opteron 254 processors produced a score of 7,612 and set the new World Record in 2-thread category (visit http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/x4100/benchmarks.jsp for the full report).

The Sun Fire X4200 server is a fast, reliable, and expandable one- to four-way  (with dual-core processors) x64 server.  Powered by up to two single- or Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors, this 2RU server is a key component in helping to lower your total cost of ownership (TCO) and simplify your data center management.  It also comes with 2.5 inch SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) enterprise class disk drive offers IOPS performance increase and 58% power savings compared to today's 3.5 inch drive.  Supports up to 16GB of DDR memory with ECC and ChipKill, provides five 64-bit high-speed PCI-X slots, four built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports and four disk drives with DVD-ROM, providing high-performance I/O and maximum expandability in a 2 RU form factor.

During the launch, Sun Microsystems also introduced Sun workstations Sun Ultra 20 Workstation, Sun Java Workstation W2100z and the Sun Java Workstation W1100z to compliment its new Opteron servers.

The most significant feature / benefit about the new Sun products is it runs virtually any operating systems including Windows.  This gives us users the flexibility to choose which operating system we want to use with One(1) machine.  Even if the partnership is between AMD / Microsoft and Sun / AMD, I hope in the future both Sun and Microsoft will realize that not working with each other is a losing proposition for both of them.  Sun fanatics unable to use Windows and Windows fanatics unable to use Sun machines.  With the Sun AMD Opteron servers, users now has the best of both worlds.  Not to mention more business for both Sun and Microsoft.

Another development worth looking at is the realization of AMDs claim as a global provider of innovative microprocessor solutions.  AMD's x86-64 technology enables the industry to advance software development on all fronts with x86 compatibility, while providing the capability of delivering 64-bit technology benefits. AMD's x86 64-bit dual-core architecture has attracted reputable vendors to join its wing: Hardware - HP, IBM, Sun Microsystems, RackSaver, Penguin Computing, Monarch Computer; Software - Oracle, Microsoft, SAP, Axceleon, MigraTEC; Motherboard manufacturers - ASUS, ECS, GIGABYTE and MSI; and even graphic chipset makers Nvidia and ATI.  All these makes AMD a serious challenger to Intel's microprocessor dominance.  Not only should Intel come up with a better technology, Intel should also consider its pricing strategy. An area where AMD is really aggressive.

And lastly, the synergy between Sun Microsystems and WordText Systems Inc. (WSI) is something to look forward to as well.  Sun machines are known for its durability, scalability and flexibility.  WSI is the leading distributor of IT products in the Philippines and is known for its excellent technical support group, very aggressive sales and marketing team, and a professional and experienced management group.

The new offerings and developments gives the users a wider option to address their I.T. requirements.  It provides innovative products, world-class services and most of all - SAVINGS to corporations, from retailers to suppliers to the consumers.  A dream team indeed.

A Secret No More:
Who is this I.T. Executive (ITE) who was abruptly terminated by his employer?  This ITE filed his resignation months ago and his employer rejected it and asked him to stay.  Months passed and the employer had a change of heart and terminated this ITE.  The employer added that this ITE is not entitled to any benefits since he already resigned months ago. HUH?  Perhaps the employer realized later the money they will be saving if they had accepted the resignation of this ITE on the first place.  Too late, Touch-move rule is in effect.  I heard a case will be filed soon.  I hope the new guy will be smart enough not to experience what his predecessor went through.  I receive an email from the employer (which I have never met) announcing the termination of this ITE and introducing his replacement.  Luckily, emails cannot be recalled that is why your secret is a secret no more.
