Vina Morales: Very loving and not at all jaded!

Vina Morales’ birthday is still on the 17th of October, yet she has already received memorable gifts to start another milestone in her life. She recently launched her latest album under Star Records entitled "Nobody Does It Better" and she has a major concert at the Dusit Hotel on Oct. 28 aptly called "An Evening with the Ultimate Performer."

"I’m really excited," she said of her show produced by Royale Era Entertainment. "This is the first time I’ll be working with Tita Annabelle (Rama) in a major show and it’s been awhile since I’ve worked with Al Quinn."

With Gerry Matias as musical director, Vina added that her show will be vibrant and energetic with her sing and dance repertoire. Her special guests that night are Gladys Guevarra, Jerome John Hughes and Ogie Alcasid. Beneficiary is Asilo Medalla Milagrosa in Cebu.

With regards to her album, she’s ecstatic about it since it deviates from what people have gotten to know her, as always dancing. "Nobody Does It Better" paints a more relaxed picture of Vina Morales with 10 remake songs. They are "Hello Love," "Make It With You," "Don’t Throw It Away" (carrier single), "Nobody Does It Better," "Love Me For What I Am," "Come What May" which is a duet with Erik Santos, "Out Of Reach," "First Time I Ever I Saw Your Face," "May Pag-ibig Pa Kaya," a duet with Jay Durias and "Set You Free."

She described her album launch as having a different feel because she was just setting down.

"Walang birit. I wanted a change pero sa album lang hindi as a performer."

According to her, the songs they picked were songs not regularly remade or have been remade but have not become a single.

"These are the songs na babagay sa akin and for the album’s concept. Actually lahat ng songs favorite ko kaya I also fell in love with the album, secondly, mga songs na nandun, relate ako, ako rin pumili!"

Vina Morales is a regular performer in ABS-CBN’s "ASAP 05." Below are excerpts of a casual conversation with the country’s Ultimate Performer!

Q: Describe how your music has evolved through the years.

A: I’ve matured as a singer. I have more emotions inside of me and I have more experiences because of what I’ve been through as a singer and as an actress. Kung marami kang experiences sa buhay pwede mong ilabas sa singing or acting. Mas nabibigyan ko ng puso yung mga kanta ko and my performances. And through my shows here and abroad, napopolish ako and improve. I never stop learning about my craft like kung may mga ideas na makakabuti sa akin, I do that.

Q: When you shifted to dancing, nagulo ba ang career path mo?

A: No, because singing and dancing go together. As a performer, My concerts won’t be complete if I don’t sing and dance. People have known me to be an energetic singer and dancer. I dance to uplift the energy of the audience.

Q: Was it because of your shift to dancing that made you train with weights?

A: I’ve been dancing the same time I’ve been working out. I’ve stopped lifting weights a long time ago. I just do cardio because it helps my breathing when I perform. Singing and dancing is very tiring especially if you don’t exercise regularly. You’ll lose your breath easily.

Q: Why did you stop lifting weights and did you take supplements?

A: No because I don’t want to bulk up. I stopped because my arms are defined already and I just keep in shape through cardio. I do yoga, aerobics and lots of dancing. It can get boring if just go to the gym and workout so I changed my routine.

Q: Everyone thought that from dancing, your sexy image on TV might translate into the movie screen.

A: I was actually offered a movie and I read the script. But I thought that there was so much showing of the skin. And I never wanted that. Siyempre as a performer, when I’m on stage baka magimagine sila dahil napanuod nila ako that I bared something eh ayaw ko! But to do a mature role, why not? I’m willing to do a sexy role because being sexy doesn’t mean you have to show the private parts of your body. Hindi ko kayang magbare. I’d rather do concerts and sing instead which is my first love anyway.

Q: You mentioned during your album launch that each song means something to you, if I say Robin Padilla, which song in your album aptly describes your relationship with him?

A: (laughed) "Set You Free"

Q: Miguel Zubiri?

A: "Love Me For What I Am" (laughed)

Q: Roy?

A: "Hello Love" and for my future (laughed) "Nobody Does It Better."

Q: Are you jaded now about love?

A: I don’t want to be jaded. Before, I was for a while because of my experiences and heartaches. Now, I’m back on track. I’m just waiting for the right person.

Q: Your thoughts about rumors that you’re the reason your relationships always don’t last....

A: I’ll admit that I have my faults and I’m not perfect. I think that’s very normal in a relationship. May mga ugali tayong gusto, merong hindi. Siguro, we just didn’t comprehend each other unlike other relationships na napatch-up nila and they worked it out.

Q: How are you in a relationship?

A: I’m very giving and I’m proud to say that I’m very loving. It’s just siguro na may situations na hindi maiiwasan and magkakagulo and siguro hindi kayo para sa isa’tisa.

Q: Maybe they don’t like you being a giving person? Were you ever told about that?

A: Hindi naman. I also learned my lessons too because sometimes I have this attitude na I keep it to myself na hindi ako nagsasalita hanggang lumalayo nang lumalayo sa tao. I’ve learned to say what and how I feel. Before kasi I have walls even in a relationship.

Q: What do you still want to do with your career?

A: As a performer, I also have dreams to make it abroad. If there’s an opportunity, why not? I’m also praying for that as well.

Q: What’s your definition of commitment right now?

A: Marriage. Being in a relationship is not a game anymore. It has to be pressured.
