Vandals wreak havoc in Manila

An army of vandals appears to be wreaking havoc in Manila as many public facilities show clear signs of destruction.

Almost everywhere, one could not fail to miss seeing broken down or missing street lights, street signs, traffic lights, power cables, and street and bridge railings.

Mayor Lito Atienza has thus asked officials of the city’s 897 barangays to become active guardians of progress by ensuring the maintenance and preservation of the city’s infrastructure in their respective areas.

Atienza was prompted to seek the barangay officials’ help after finding out that many of the modern lamp posts that his administration has put up have been vandalized by still unknown persons.

The cost is not a pittance. Officials said prices of street lights vary from P38,000 to P60,000 per post. Street signs cost about P800 each.

Sometimes, the culprit is not human since some public facilities crumble due to old age.
