Ateneo, La Salle renew golf rivalry

ATENEO DE Manila University eyes a sweet repeat and De La Salle University sets out for vindication when they renew their rivalry on the fairway in the second staging of the Ateneo-La Salle Championship Matches at the Camp John Hay Golf Club in Baguio on October 21-23.

Organizing the tournament for the De La Salle Alumni Association and the Ateneo Golf Foundation is Club Leisure Management Corporation, the management company running select Golf Clubs and Hotels in the Philippines.

Camp John Hay chairman Bob Sobrepeña announced yesterday that the tournament will serve as a new challenge to both schools because the event patterns its matches after the famous Ryder Cup format.

Ateneo won the first staging last year at Sherwood Hills Golf Club of the tourney which has Smart Communications as presentor and PLDT, Camp John Hay Golf Club, CJH Dev’t. Co., CJH Manor, Golforce, Gainers Marketing, Pisanti, Kork, Le Chef, Club Leisure as among the early sponsors.

The Ryder Cup format calls for Best Ball/Aggregate format on the first day. It will be Alternate shots on the second day and Singles on the third day. Thus, it is not only a test of skills, but also of stamina and staying power as some golfers may play up to 5 matches in 3 days. And the mountain course at Camp John Hay will be a fitting challenge for these top golfers.

Sobrepeña added that only eighteen of the best golfers from both each school will have the privilege to join the battle for golf supremacy and a year of bragging rights.

The DLSU campaign will be bannered by Freddie Mendoza as skipper while the Ateneo challenge will be led by skipper Teboy Javier and Jimmy General as manager.

Ateneo is expected to retain the core of last year’s winning team which included Bong Brobio, Iggy Clavecilla, Louie Dacudao, Anthony Fernando, Jeric Hechanova, Mari Hechanova, Marty Ilagan, Bobby Iñigo, Pepot Iñigo, Manny Lacson, Mark Lopez, Noel Lopez, Jovi Neri, Joel Opaco, Mike Ozaeta, Jun Jun Plana, Lino Retuerto, Jingy Tuason, Yoyong Velez, and Bobby Ysip.

La Salle’s 2004 squad of Tommy Manotoc, JP Reyes, Justin Limjap, Hanson So Jr., Abe Rosal, Bobby Celestino, Larry Tojino, Oliver Gan, Raymond Sangil, Ave Avena, King Stehmeier, Miko Yee, Francis Gaston, Jenz Tecson, Miko Alejandro and Justin Tambunting should also look basically the same.
