A look at the future in 3G: Pinoys get ready for the next wave of the mobile revolution

From SMS to MMS and even mobile commerce, Filipinos have easily and eagerly embraced new developments in communications technology. Now, mobile-savvy Pinoys can get ready with 3G (short for third-generation), the next step in the global mobile revolution, following the advent of such cutting-edge technologies as GPRS (2.5G) and EDGE (2.75G).

Aside from standard voice calls, text messages, and emails, 3G allows mobile users to perform Internet browsing, multimedia streaming and large file downloading at broadband speeds, make video calls, and send videos to other 3G users. This new technology has been all the rage in other countries in Europe and Asia, where it’s becoming more common to see people watching television programs or playing multi-player online games on their phones while on the move. Once introduced into the local market, 3G can open new possibilities for communication, information sharing, and entertainment.

In the country, Globe Telecom is the first to obtain a 3G trial license from the National Telecommunications Commission. In fact, it has already successfully tested video call, streaming and other 3G services, which will pave the way for the introduction of this breakthrough life-changing technology into the Philippines.

Web connection and downloading in a flash
Browsing websites on a 3G phone is convenient because of fast Internet connection and download speeds enabled by this technology. 3G provides mobile office and business services, and access to large data streams such as videos, music albums, or movie trailers on one’s mobile phone anytime, anywhere.  Users can also download and access large data files, listen to an entire album of their favorite artist, watch a music video, or engage in multi-player online games with friends on a 3G phone. One can connect the 3G phone to a laptop or desktop PC and use it as a modem, or use a 3G data card as well. This combination of the mobile phone’s portability and 3Gs rapid access to the Internet may yet be the next big technological leap for Filipinos.

Beyond MMS and voice calls
Filipinos will experience a new way of connecting with others through the video call and video share functions of 3G. Video calling makes the phone call more vivid as both parties simultaneously see each other on their 3G phone screens. Businessmen can also use this feature to hold video conferences. On the other hand, video sharing enables one-way sending of video streams or clips taken with the phone’s camera. This makes it more interactive and real time than MMS, by enabling the sender to share what he/she sees at that moment and providing for conversation with the recipient during the call. These features have revolutionized the way people communicate in other countries – and may soon enrich Filipinos’ lives as well.

Pinoys gear up for 3G
Since the mobile phone has already become a convenient and well-trusted medium to Filipinos, consumers here seem ready to ride on the 3G wave. In fact, Globe roaming subscribers can use its 3G partner networks NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone in Japan, Orange in Hong Kong and Singtel in Singapore when traveling to these countries, making it the first Filipino telecommunications company to offer 3G experience to its subscribers.

3G certainly presents an array of relevant and interesting possibilities for communication, information access, business, and entertainment. All these will certainly enhance the Filipinos’ mobile lifestyle and keep them up-to-date with the richer, fast-paced connectivity that’s currently linking up the global community.
