Brake system and the fluid: An important combination

An automobile’s brake system is one of the most important in the whole machine yet it could be one of the most misunderstood.

A vehicle’s brake system works when the driver pushes down on the brake pedal. This sends fluid under pressure to a brake assembly at each wheel, while at the same time, the fluid in the brake assembly forces a stationary part against a rotating part.

In effect, the friction between the two parts slows or stops the rotating part and the wheel — thus slowing and stopping the car.

According to Prestone, the key to this operation is the brake fluid. It plays a major role in any hydraulic brake system because it brings together all the other components of into an integral operating unit.

The vehicle’s brake system is undeniably important because it controls the safety of the vehicle, and in turn ensures the safety of the passengers. Thus, it is also imperative that only the best brake fluid be used.

Technically speaking, a hydraulic brake system can be actuated by almost any type of liquid because the principle behind it — fluid pressure transmission – is basically the same, whether one uses water, oil, alcohol or any other liquid.

However, brake systems would demand a type of fluid can withstand problems of evaporation, and prevent metal corrosion and damage on rubber parts such as hoses, seals and cups. It also has to withstand extreme changes in temperature.

Thus, the only fluids safe for use in hydraulic brake systems are those specifically formulated for this singular purpose.

Prestone says that high-quality brake fluids should be able to flow freely at different conditions to ensure proper operation. Boiling point should be higher as it must remain liquid even at the highest operating temperatures. The brake fluid should be lubricating to reduce friction and wear of pistons and cups. It should also absorb moisture and remove water to prevent internal rusting and corrosion.

Prestone brake fluid has the right combination of ingredients to provide a finished product with these desired characteristics.

Prestone Brake Fluid is actually a scientifically compounded and chemically balanced formula developed for use in all types of automobile and truck hydraulic brake systems, including those utilizing disc brakes.

It is formulated safe, dependable performance of your vehicle’s hydraulic brake system for long periods of time and under a wide range of operating conditions.
