RP ends up 19th in Spirit golf

THE PHILIPPINES finished a disappointing 19th in a field of 22 as its ladies squad closed out the 2005 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championships the way it started it — in forgettable fashion.

Anya Tanpinco and Lora Roberto combined for a second straight 73 after two 74s, virtually impeding Gene Bondoc and Marvin Dumandan’s closing 68 that would’ve rallied the country from 16th place at the Whispering Pines Golf course in Houston Saturday.

Instead, the Philippines wallowed in 19th place with a 568 after another 141, barely besting Colombia (141-571) and Finland (146574). Puerto Rico was last at 611 after a 154.

England, boosted by its ladies’ team solid campaign, ran away with the crown with a 533 after a fiery 131 as it posted an eight-stroke victory over South Africa (138-541) and dethroned champion the United States (136-541).
