UST table netters score sweep in UAAP tourney

UNIVERSITY OF Santo Tomas swept the UAAP Season 68 table tennis seniors crowns recently, beating University of the East on and off the table in the men’s side and trampling Far Eastern U in the women’s contest.

The Tigers swept the UE Red Paddlewielders, 3-1, in the second round of action at the UST gym but the result was protested by UE claiming the UST coaching staff did not properly fill up entry forms for the matches.

The protest was turned down, allowing UST to retain the men’s crown and keep UE in the same finish as it did last season.

The Tigers banked on Jimboy Baring, Michael Paña, Dan Lopez, Regie Rosales and Felix Marforie in clinching their fourth UAAP table tennis title.

FEU and University of the Philippines finished third and fourth in the men’s section.

The Tigresses made FEU eat dust in the finals, 3-1, to capture the title that escaped their grip last year. FEU ended up second, followed by De La Salle, which failed to repeat as champion, and Ateneo.

UST’s Jimboy Baring and Princess Paña were named  Most Valuable Players in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. De La Salle’s Ayra Malabayabas and Ateneo’s Percival Elfran were adjudged Rookies of the Year.

Juniors action saw UE retain the crown, followed by UST and then UP. UE’s Jayson Mesias was named MVP while teammate Fritz Mendoza is this year’s top rookie.
