By Annalyn S. Jusay (now blogging at www.annalyn.net)
Only 23 years old, blogger and engineer Karla Redor is typical of the rest of her computer-savvy generation and maybe more. She was still in college when she dipped her hands into website development. She started blogging in 2001 when she learned how to do websites and her cleanly-designed, WordPress-driven blog is an example. It was so named because of Karla's "exposure to the local indie scene" but it would be a mistake to think that this site is only about music. It is in fact a compendium of the author's many interests which include photography, dining out, and sports among other things.
Karla's blog, found at www.rockersworld.com, may be considered the quintessential one because it contains all the useful links about the personal site and its author. For instance, there are portions about Karla's portfolio, photoblog, resume and some more nifty trivia about her, including that of her family.
Get to know more about this outstanding, prolific blogger in the following interview:
Q. Please tell us something about yourself.
A. Right now, I'm pre-occupied with my work in Makati and in writing in my blog and for group blogs (Blogkadahan, PinoyTechBlog, PinoyTravelBlog, and Litratista) as well. As for my right-brain side, I'm inclined to listening to rock music, reading modern literature and some classic literature, watching movies, digital photography and web and graphic design.
Q. How did you start to blog? What were your objectives in putting up the blog?
A. I started blogging on November of 2001. Before creating my very first blog, I already had my personal website. When Yuga started his blog using Blogger API, I became interested in making one. My objectives in putting up the blog is to improve my writing skills and also to share my random rants and thoughts.
Q. Why the title "Rockers' World?"
A. Rocker's World is a phase in my college life where I'd go to gigs and watch every week. Of course, I still go to gigs but not as often as before.
Q. What do you like about blogging as a personal activity? What do you think are blogging's other uses as you see it in others?
A. Blogging is my ultimate stress reliever. It's like I'm typing on the keyboard and every key pressed has an equivalent stress released. For others, they blog so that they could easily communicate with their friends. Others blog something about their interests which turns to be informative or either entertaining.
Q. Please tell us something about your blog and describe. How did you set up your website and how long did it take? What CMS are you using?
A. Originally, Rocker's World uses Blogger API. After some time, I shifted to WordPress after having problems with Blogger (i.e. service temporarily unavailable). I also have a photoblog setup it's called Trigger Happy (www.rockersworld.com/photos). I used PixelPost for that since it's really made for photoblogging.
Q. What are your favorite add-ons/ plug-ins? What are you using right now?
A. The add-ons that I'm using are Tag-Board (tag-board.com), Guestbook (via signmyguestbook.com). Plug-ins for WordPress that I'm currently using is BStat which has statistics of recently commented posts, mostly read posts, top search engine referrals (keywords), top non-search engine referrals (keywords searched within the site), total accumulated reads since it was installed, and average daily hits. I also use Subscribe to Comments plugin.
Q. Your online/blogging habits.
A. When I blog, I usually blog of the movies that I've seen, where I ate, places that I have gone too, music that I would recommend, gigs that I went to, some interesting discoveries and funny stuff as well. I don't blog about work-related stuff, and I don't blog about too personal stuff. Aside from blogging and checking e-mail, I'd surf around for interesting blogs to read, visit some blogs of my friends that I haven't seen in a while or chat with my friends via YM.
Q. Where do you think is blogging headed in the future? What's its future in the Philippines?
A. There are a lot of Filipino bloggers, be it here in the Philippines or in abroad. Most Filipino bloggers write for their own entertainment. Right now, there are already existing blogs ran by companies and some are blogs specializing on a certain area where revenues are generated through advertisements. If blogging would be introduced also as a form of marketing strategy or as an educational tool, the number of bloggers would increase dramatically.
Q. What do you think are the qualities of a good blogger?
A. A good blogger is investigative. He/She presents facts that are well-researched. He/She acknowledges the source of information. Most importantly, a good blogger has a sense of integrity which is usually gauged if he/she does plagiarize or not. A good blogger can be a pro-blogger too. But, not all pro-bloggers are good bloggers.
Q. How do you think has blogging evolved in the country since you started in 2001?
A. Blogging has dramatically evolved since I started. Before, it's like an underground thing where a few people would care about blogging. Now, the number of people who are into blogging increased.
Q. You are a member of such groups as Blogkadahan/PTB etc. How important is networking to you? How do you find the time?
A. The world is indeed small, and the blogging world is even smaller. Being a member of such group blogs, my blogging network has increased. You see, it is like Friendster where you hop on each blog and see in the link that someone you know is linked to that blog. You may not be able to see the results of networking (in the blogging world per se) in a short span of time but, you'll see it later on. Who knows, you might be looking for someone to interview and it happens that you know a particular blogger that specializes on a particular topic. I only blog at home and never blogged during office hours. Of course, my time at home is solely dedicated to stuff other than work.
Q. What advice can you give fellow bloggers on time management and being committed to blogging?
A. You really do not have to force yourself to post something. Even if you are not in front of the computer, you can always jot down what you'd like to blog about. When you go online, then you could blog about what you have written. To be a committed blogger means that one should have discipline. One should use his or her time wisely. A flashing light bulb might appear even if you are just walking on your way to work or school.
Q. Any other plans for your blogs?
A. Rocker's World will still remain to be my personal journal. As of now, I don't have plans yet in changing the layout of my blog or my photoblog for that matter. I'm thinking about putting some pretty useful plugins developed for WordPress.
