BACOLOD CITY — By virtue of Executive Order 27, Mayor Evelio Bing Leonardia has declared world superfeatherweight champion Emmannuel "Manny" Pacquiao as an adopted son of Bacolod.
The said EO states that Bacolod, being a boxing-friendly city — having facilities for boxing matches as evidenced by her hosting of the Mayor’s Cup International Boxing competition in 1998 — and being home to boxing heroes like Pancho Villa, Olympic medalists Leopoldo Servantes, and Onyok Velasco, would like to welcome the sensation better known in the international arena as the "Pacman" as part of their family.
Bacolod has exalted Pacquiao’s contributions to the country as a Philippine sports hero and boxing icon whose triumphs against legendary boxers have earned the respect and admiration of the Filipino people, and united the nation in the midst of political divisiveness.
Bacolod is the venue for boxing in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, which will start on November 27 and end on December, 2005.
Hence, EO 22 states that Pacquiao has given the Philippines highest honor and prestige through sports, thereby establishing goodwill, friendship and peace.
Therefore, Leonardia said, Pacquiao was accorded all honors and courtesies by declaring him as adopted son of Bacolod City. This recognition has given impetus during the awarding anniversary rites marking the 67th Charter Day celebration of Bacolod City.
With wife Jinky, Mayor Leonardia, Vice Mayor Renecito Novero, and members of the Sangguniang Panglunsod, Pacquiao received this recognition with misty eyes, saying, "I am happy and proud to be your adopted son. I will never forget this in my whole life." (Edith Colmo)
