NegOr group launches anti-mining movement

DUMAGUETE CITY — A movement against globalization of the mining industry, destruction, and plunder called the "Defend our Patrimony (DoP)-Negros Oriental Chapter" was launched this week here.

Trelly Marigza, chapter chairperson, said mining activities are increasing in almost all of the three districts of Oriental Negros, from Basey to Guihulngan.

She said their group will monitor these activities, including the oil exploration along Tañon Strait, that has drawn massive protests from local government units (LGUs) and fisherfolk in the entire Negros Island, and the provinces of Cebu, Siquijor and Bohol.

To conduct lectures and briefings are DoP regional chair Fr. Ireneo Gordoncillo of the Diocese of Bacolod, and Clemente Bautista, executive director of Kalikasan Foundation.

Gordoncillo said the increasing mining activities in Negros Island has reached an alarming proportion. (PNA)
