The box office king has set a new record for Regal Entertainment and APT Films in the comedy-horror movie "Ispiritista: Itay, May Moomoo!" when the movie raked in R10 million on its first day of showing on Wednesday in Metro Manila theaters.
An elated Lily Monteverde, who co–produced the movie with Antonio P. Tuvera, said the first day gross of "Ispiritista" is the highest take so far for Regal Entertainment this year.
"This is beyond my wildest expectations," said Mother Lily, whose faith in the Filipino movie has not wavered despite the slump in the movie industry.
"The success of the movie shows that the audience will watch a good movie all the time," she added. "It also proves the charm of Vic Sotto and his comic genius."
No cost was spared to produce the movie directed by Tony Y. Reyes. About
R9 million was spent on special effects alone to produce state-of-the-art computer effects and animation.
Earlier, Vic Sotto himself said that he did not believe that the movie industry was dead.
"The audience would always watch a quality movie," he said, "and ‘Ispiritista’ is an excellent movie that combines comedy, horror, special effects and family values. This combination would always ensure a quality film. I’m happy to be part of this effort."
The success of "Ispiritista" also marks the superstardom of child actor BJ Forbes, the popular tot in the TV laundry detergent commercial.
Vic had predicted that BJ would be the next child star.
"I’m happy for BJ," said Vic. "He deserves this success. Among the child actors I have worked with, from Niño Muhlach to Izza Seguerra, BJ was the only one who did not have tantrums. He is more than a pro. I would describe him as a seasoned actor."
