Fast completion of N. Luzon roads, highways urged

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur – Ilocos Sur Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson has appealed for the construction of the remaining roads and highways that will integrate Regions 1, 2 and Cordillera in Northern Luzon.

In a meeting with officials of the North Luzon Growth Quadrangle Area-Program Management Office (NLGQA-PMO) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Singson said that with the completion of the Baguio-Benguet-Aritao in 2007 and the start of construction of the Suyo-Cervantes-Mankayan-Abatan Road in January 2006, the Ilocos Sur-Abra-Kalinga-Cagayan Road from Vigan-Narvacan-Bangued-Lagangilang to Balbalan-Lubuagan-Tabuk-Tuguegarao should immediately be completed.

He said the move would further hasten economic development in Northern Luzon.

He also called on public works officials to finish the Ilocos Norte Apayao-Cagayan Road covering Laoag-San Nicolas-Solsona-Kabugao-Tuao-Tuguegarao.

"These road networks will open new areas for agribusiness and fully complement President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s 10-point agenda which includes the creation of six million jobs by 2010," Singson said.

He noted that there are many agricultural products in the Cordilleras that cannot be fully developed and sold because of the bad roads in the area.

Some products that will surely benefit from better road systems in Northern Luzon are coffee in Kalinga and cut flowers, potatoes and strawberries in Benguet and Nueva Viscaya.

In the meeting, Undersecretary Hermenegildo C. Dumlao, executive director of the NLGQA-PMO and Singson agreed to make an immediate appeal to DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr., through Undersecretary Manuel M. Bonoan and Philippine Japan Highway Loan (PJHL) Director Vicente P. Perez, to look into immediate implementation of critical road network projects which is urgently needed by the people.
