CAMP AQUINO, Tarlac City — A kidnapped poultry caretaker saved a platoon of retreating New People’s Army (NPA) rebels from pursuing government troops but it cost him his life.
Army reports said Luis Carisma was grabbed by the group of NPAs Tuesday at the height of an encounter and used as human shield during a 30-minute clash with government troops in Sitio Gulod, Barangay Matictic, Norzagaray, Bulacan.
He was grabbed by NPA rebels at the height of the encounter on Tuesday (October 18) to serve as their protective shield while being pursued by elements of Bravo Company, 56th Infantry Battalion. At that time, many of the rebels were already wounded so they were left with no choice but to escape bringing along their male hostage to ward off government troops.
The soldiers stopped firing in the rebels’ direction when they spotted the victim, enabling the NPAs to escape. Carisma tried to flee from his captors and he was shot and left bleeding on the ground.
The soldiers immediately brought him to Sta. Maria Hospital in Sta. Maria, Bulacan but was pronounced dead on arrival due to blood loss.
Northern Luzon Command chief Maj. Gen. Romeo Tolentino condemned the NPA for the killing as he extended his sympathy to the family of Carisma.
He said Carisma was one of the workers of the poultry farm who were hoping to have a bright Christmas this year. They have been requesting for a slight raise in salary to cope up with escalating prices of basic commodities, but the owner cannot grant their request immediately because of rampant NPA extortion.
Residents reported seeing more or less 12 armed rebels at around 5 a.m. last Friday, October 21 in the area.
The rebels left the place for a while and when they came back, they had with them a cow which the group butchered for their meal.
The owner, a certain "Restituto Feliciano", said at gunpoint, his cow was taken away by the NPAs.
