HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Until, finally, in 1950 a 12 bed capacity maternity clinic and a pharmacy at the corner of Maria Clara and Don Quijote Streets came into existence after the liberation. Because of their patience and their devotion to their patron, Saint Jude Thaddeus and love for each other, their prayers were answered, Dr. Atienza who had been a consultant for the Rizal Provincial hospital and Dra. Felicidad Calip-Atienza, then practicing OB Gynecology.
Through the founders’ good deeds, they were fortunate to have been able to expand and build a two-story concrete hospital with a fifty-bed capacity, in 1963. Then, the hospital expanded with the erection of a 150 bed capacity five-story building. In the same period, an eight-story college building was inaugurated. Then on October 28, 1968, the School of Nursing was established.
A non-sectarian institution, SJC was established in honor of St. Jude Thaddeus, depicting the true Christian spirit St. Jude Advocates and the institution’s surging towards academic excellence.
The School of Nursing complimented the goal set by the founders of a modern and fully equipped medical institution. The first graduates, class of 1971, took the nursing Board Exam with a 100% passing rate.
Beginning from a hospital-school, the board of trustees gave serious study to the possibility of converting the school into a college. Thus St. Jude School of Nursing was converted to a college through the resolution of the board passed on August 5,1973.
In 1974, consonant with programs of the ministries of Health, Education and Culture the institution molded its vision and mission of academic excellence alongside nurturing spiritual values. In its desire to give service to humanity, a permit was issued to the School of Nursing to operate as a college. SJC also offered the Liberal Arts course leading to the Graduate Studies for Nurses (GN) and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs. Likewise it opened the two-year course in Medical Secretarial.
In 1975, the Bachelor of Arts was offered. The following year the Bachelor of Science in Secretarial Administration and Business Administration were also offered. Short-term courses were opened such as a one-year course in Health Aid, two-year courses in Cooperative Small Business Management, Dietitian Aid, Salesmanship, Junior Secretarial course and Supplemental course in Nursing.
Then in 1977 the High School Building and the Main Building was constructed. By then Baccalaureate courses such as B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics, B.S. in Commerce, B.S. Nursing and Bachelor of Arts, major in English, Filipino and History were already being offered.
In 1978, the three-story elementary school building was constructed. The first Graduate course, Master in Hospital Administration and Master in Arts in Nursing were opened. 1984 saw the opening of the B.S. in Foods and Nutrition and other Masteral degree programs such as Public Administration, Food and Nutrition, and Records Management. From 1985 to 1986, government permits were granted to open the following courses: Associate in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Associate in Radiologic Technology, and Master of Arts in teaching Nursing Education.
Then, in the late 1980’s, the Graduate School of Midwifery, B.S. in Civil Engineering, B.S. in Industrial Management, B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Associate in Tourism were added to the list of approved courses.
With the vision for progressive and dynamic education, another building was constructed. This is the present College of Physical Therapy, built due to the increasing number of students in other courses. Thus, it was at this time that the B.S. in Occupational Therapy, Associate in B.S. Computer Science was applied for and permits to operate were granted.
In 1996, The Saint Jude community was grief stricken. It’s founder and first President Dr. Ramon D. Atienza Jr. passed away in August 7, and was extolled as a philanthropist and a great benefactor to humanity. After which, on October 21, 1996 his wife and co-founder Dra. Felicidad Calip- Atienza was installed as the school’s second President.
Responding to the clamor to bring education to the rural areas, St Jude College established its first extension school at Salitran, Dasmariñas, Cavite. Year 2002 saw the beginning of vast changes in the leadership style of the acting President, Dr. Evangeline Atienza-Del Rosario choosing a roster of new appointees, continuing key management personnel, resulting in a more participative approach to decision-making through Decentralization and Empowerment.
The school takes pride of Thaddean achievers particularly in topping the Board Examinations. The College of Nursing has consistently produced successful passers in the top 20 from 1987 to 2001, while the school of Midwifery garnered the 6th and 7th place in the 1992 board examinations.
The College of Radiologic Technology has also brought honor to the institution for having been recognized as the top 6th performing schools in the board examinations. At the same time the college went international at New Jersey, USA where two of its graduates topped the Board exam 3rd and 7th place, respectively in 2001.
