VP De Castro, 4 firms back Espiritu Cup golf

VICE PRESIDENT Noli de Castro heads the early list of backers of the first Ambassador Edgardo B. Espiritu Golf Cup, a one-day, fund-raising event which aims to generate funds for the scholarship of poor but deserving students, on Nov. 14 at the Manila Golf Club inside Forbes Park.

Real Bank, the Manila Jockey Club, Coastal Road Print Town and Southeast Asia Ventures Group are the four other companies that have thrown their support to the tournament held in honor of the former finance secretary and the current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Iceland.

Espiritu, who was named president of the Philippine National Bank in 1987 and was appointed the Secretary of Finance in 1998, is spearheading the staging of the tournament along with his co-members of the Batch ‘55 of the Upsilon Sigma Phi, which is organizing the event through its Upsilon Foundation, Inc.

Espiritu, who became president of Metrobank in 1983 and took over the chairmanship of the National Power Corp. in 1986, has invited his friends from both the private and government sectors to lend a hand to ensure the success of the event. For details, contact Michael Montemayor, chairman of executive committee at 0920-9619123 and 807-7950 or e-mail at montem@attglobal.net.

The event, which is expected to lure close to 100 players, including the regulars of the 22-year-old Upsilonians na Pumapalo, also serves as part of the golden anniversary celebrations of Batch ‘55 of the Upsilon Sigma Phi, which was founded in 1918.

Seed money for the scholarship fund has already been put up courtesy of Domingo Santiago Jr. and Espiritu with officials projecting the foundation’s funds to grow to P20 million by the time the fraternity celebrates its centennial in 2018.

Batch ‘55 has actually started its fund-raising projects during the Baguio bash last month with the funding of four Gawad Kalinga houses. The Upsilon is the first fraternity partner of Gawad Kalinga, wherein Upsilon neophytes, residents and alumni can help build Gawad Kalinga houses through the Bayanihan spirit.
