UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and La Salle hope to draw the best from their veteran crew as they brace for tough outing against a field out to foil their title-retention bids in the JVC Inter-scholastics Badminton Championships set Nov. 17-23 at the PowerSmash Badminton Center and Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.
Ricky Bartolome, Alfredo Mailon, Pierre Arden Pantig and Ryan Conde head UST’s back-to-back title bid in the men’s side while the talented group of Therine Chan, Paula Chan, Michelle Guerrero, Paula Obañana, Stephinie Sy and Jean Pearl Go carry the cudgels for the Lady Archers as they seek to defend their crown in the ladies side of the centerpiece collegiate division.
But with so much pride and honor, not to mention the juicy R50,000 top purse, staked in each division, expect the rest of the field to go flat out for the victory, ensuring a wide open battle for badminton supremacy among the top colleges and universities in the country.
The organizing IMG said registration is free and is ongoing. Entry forms are available on the website, www.jvcbadminton.com. Deadline for submission of entries is on Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. For details, contact 894-2995, 09178050702, 0917-8050601, 725-2568 and 0917-5288970.
Far Eastern U, whose campaign this year is built around Wilson Frias, Mark Alvin Natividad, Jimson Dionisio, Wilmer Frias and Adrian Toledo, will be there fighting as it tries to redeem itself from a finals setback to UST last year. Others in the fold are Trinity College, Philippine Normal U, Polytechnic Univ. of the Phils., Phil. Women’s Univ., Miriam College, Siena College, College of St. Benilde, Phil. Maritime Institue, Technological Inst. of the Phils. and Colegia San Agustin-Southwoods.
Joining the hunt for the crown are the winners in the recent JVC regional championships, including Holy Angel University of Pampanga, University of Visayas, University of San Jose Recoletos-Cebu, University of Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao and Iloilo Doctors College, making the tournament truly national in scope.
The event, which caps JVC’s year-long sponsorship of the sport which it helped popularize five years ago, offers more than R300,000 in cash prizes. It is backed by Planet Sports, Bingo Bonanza, L Timestudio, Rudy Project, Gillette, Bacchus Energy Drink, Alaska, Lactacyd, Sunbolt, Coffee House, Accel, PhilStar, Pinoy Exchange.Com, Solar Sports, Ayala Center, PowerSmash and Magic 89.9.
