Bayantel rolls out triple play service

Bayan Telecommunications Inc. (Bayantel) has rolled out its triple play service to deliver Voice Over Internet (VOIP), broadband Internet and Sky Cable TV channels to households using a single line in Dumaguete City.

The service will start commercial operations next month, after the monthly fees and other commercial issues are finalized, announced Bayantel chief executive consultant Tunde Fafunwa.

"We will soon complete the upgrade of our network to deliver ultra fast bandwidth into homes founded on our 10 Gigabits per second National Digital Transmission Network (NDTN) network," he explained.

All three companies of the Lopez Group – Bayantel, ABS-CBN and Sky Cable are "in the midst of converging technologies that would change the way information and entertainment is delivered to households," the consultant noted.

At present, ABS-CBN is strengthening its creative content in multiple formats to target niche audiences while Sky Cable expands its distribution channels.

Just recently, BayanTel partnered with ECI Telecoms to deliver advanced IP-based applications such as Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), VoIP, massive multi-layer online role playing game (MMORPG), video streaming and other bandwidth-demanding triple play services for residential and small business customers.

The project includes the deployment of new generation metro fiber optic nodes within a few hundred meters of a subscriber’s home, providing secure connectivity.

Overall, BayanTel and ABS-CBN CEO Eugenio Lopez III believes that the Lopez Group is the only entity at present that has the content and distribution capabilities to execute a triple play strategy.

Bayantel chose Dumaguete for the initial rollout of its triple play service because the city is a major destination of business process outsourcing companies (BPOs) like call centers in the Visayas.

In addition, Sky Cable through PPC and BayanTel has a significant market share in the area, which is also a major point of presence for its NDTN network.
