It was a scene straight out of The Exorcist.
Dexter Delada, a steelfisted lightweight from Cebu, went down face-first after taking a thunderous left straight to the jaw from Philippine champion Fernando Montilla in the fourth round of their scheduled 12-rounder at the San Andres Civic and Sports Center.
Delada’s head bounced off the canvas as the bell sounded ending the round. Referee Bruce McTavish did not even bother to count .
The challenger’s handlers, ring physician Nasser Cruz, and even those from Montilla’s corner rushed to the ring to check on the fallen fighter’s condition.
For a while, Delada lay motionless before being helped out of the ring.
Nicknamed "Dinamita," Delada actually came on the verge of dethroning Montilla in the third round when he sent the champ crashing down with a counter left straight to the kisser.
In the other title fight, Eric Barcelona barely kept his Philippine super-flyweight crown with a split decision over Celso Danggud, whose face resembled a Halloween mask just moments before the final bell.
Danggud knocked Barcelona down midway through the bout but the champ managed to move around and bank on the points that he built up early in the fight to eke out the victory.
North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol, who put up the fights, said proceeds will go to two-time world champion Luisito Espinosa, whose $130,349 purse from a successful defense of the World Boxing Council featherweight throne in Dec. 1997 in Koronadal, South Cotabato, remains unpaid to this day.
