Antonio Alcasid Jr. found no need to use the whip as Real Spicy outclassed the field in the Vicente Puyat Cup 3-Year-Old Colts, while Jesse Guce also sat quietly atop Euro Bucks who trounced her rivals in the Philtobo 3-Year-Old Fillies for her sixth victory in succession..
Real Spicy, tagged as the best 3-year-old galloper in the country today, spearheaded a big Esguerra romp last year as a 2-year-old and returned successfully to win the event which he used to warm up for his next important assignment.
Esguerra also shone as breeder of Real Spicy, a son of 1998 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes champion Real Quiet out of Spicy Tale, while former Marho chief Aristeo "Putch" Puyat also got an award as breeder of Euro Bucks, a daughter of Account of Grace out of Leveret. Both gallopers are trained by former jai-alai star Andrew "Filipino" Sanchez.
Real Spicy, gearing up for his rematch with import Wild Orchid in next week’s Speaker’s Cup, finished the 1,600-meter race way, way ahead of Golden Fantasy, Smokin’ Red and At All Cost. He clocked 1:39.6
Euro Bucks was similarly awesome in notching one of the longest winning streaks this year as she prevailed by six lengths over Full of Fury. Extreme Heat wound up third then came Unrivaled.
In the two other major events flagged off at presstime, Speed Advantage of the Yutadco Stable whipped import Golden Link in the Magic Millions Cup, while the Naval Stable’s Vivere turned back Esguerra’s Moab in the Wind Blown Sprint Cup.
Fernando Raquel Jr. simply drove Speed Advantage (Royal Premiere-Trudy Capote) within range of Golden Link and finished off the latter with a powerful burst at midstretch to win the 2,050m event by five lengths. Magic Millions managing director David Chester was on hand to award the trophies to Speed Advantage’s connections
Moab was hoping to give Esguerra his third win for the day but the Jonathan Hernandez-guided Vivere (Heza Gone West-Vice Shy) flashed good form in topping the 900m contest by two lengths.
Likewise taking home awards as breeders were Noel Cariño for Speed Advantage and Albert Yam for Vivere.
Imported gallopers Mighty Mare and Glamour also gave Philtobo president Bienvenido "Nonoy" Niles Jr. some reasons to cheer when they won two of the accompanying events — the Philtobo-Marho Friendship Cup and Philtobo-Don Juan Friendship Cup, respectively.
The other major events still to be contested in the biggest, single-day racing spectacle in the country are the PGMA Unity Cup Classic, Mitra Cup Juvenile Colts and Mitra Cup Juvenile Fillies.
