Tropical storm "Pepeng" (international codename: "Bolaven") made landfall on the northeastern coast of Isabela yesterday, bringing rains and gusty winds to Northern Luzon.
"Pepeng" had become a typhoon Friday but it weakened into a tropical storm Saturday morning, then further weakened into a tropical depression yesterday.
It was moving north-northeast at 9 kilometers an hour, the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
According to the weather bureau, the tropical depression was estimated at 90 kilometers (kms.) west-southwest of Aparri, Cagayan, as of 2 p.m. yesterday. It had maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph.) near the center, down from its previous 65 kph. when it was still a tropical storm.
The rest of Luzon, meanwhile, will be mostly cloudy with rainshowers and thunderstorms while Visayas and Mindanao will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.
PAGASA added that moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.
Based on PAGASA’s severe weather bulletin issued at 5 p.m. yesterday, "Pepeng" is expected to be in the vicinity of Basco, Batanes, by this afternoon. By tomorrow, it is expected to be at 290 kms. northeast of Basco and by Tuesday, it will be at 240 kms. south of Okinawa, Japan.
Public storm warning signal No. 1 was hoisted over Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and Cagayan province, including Calayan and the Babuyan group of islands.
Storm signals elsewhere in the country were lowered by the weather bureau.
