BSP says sorry to GMA for misspelled surname

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) apologized to President Arroyo yesterday for misspelling her surname in a new batch of P100 bank notes, which was apparently hastily printed for the holiday season.

BSP Deputy Gov. Armando L. Suratos released a statement yesterday advising the public that although the notes had errors in spelling, they will still be considered as official money.

"In accordance with policy, these R100 bank notes that have been issued by BSP are considered legal tender and should be accepted as genuine currency," Suratos said.

The printing of these bank notes had been outsourced to ensure sufficient supply of P100 bank notes during Christmas.

The BSP said the printed P100 bank notes bearing the misspelled surname of President Arroyo are only a limited number. "The BSP has apologized to the President over the incident," said Suratos.
