Trash need not smell, RP firm tells local execs

BACOLOD CITY – Aside from the natural farming technology that has led to odorless piggeries, Negros Occidental may also lead in the drive to end the obnoxious parade of foul smelling dump trash loaded with trash.

Like odorless piggeries, odorless trash trucks will use organic substances that not only disinfects but also destroyes bacteria, fungi, salmonella and coliform.

The secret behind a product that is making waves among local government units (LGUs) is that the active ingredient comes from plants and as such is biodegradable.

This product, farmers here have found out, could be used to deodorize waste treatment plants, disinfection units in hospitals, wastewater treatment facilities and factories that process chemical agents noted for less than pleasant smell.

Like natural farming, which is less expensive in terms of fertilizers and feeds for swine, the multipurpose plant extract in Plantex does not harm the environment, as extensive laboratory tests in Belgium, Switzerland and in South Korea proved.

The extract is now being tested in dump trucks in Metro Manila,. Zamboanga Sibugay, Laguna, and in many other areas even as demand has been high for the product.

What has made it attractive, farmers say, is that it is safe and could be used without any risk to farm animals, humans and plants.

This is the kind of product that has made farmers like Buddy Montinola interested in organic farming and the use of organic substances to improve the agricultural environment and improve yields and, naturally, profits.

Montinola started operating a 10-piglet piggery using natural farming technology in his sugarcane farm at Hacienda Matab-ang, Talisay City.

Plantex, other farmers found out, could also activate compost and hasten the degradation of organic waste and transform them into fertilizers.

With more ordinances banning dump trucks that reek of garbage, the stage has been set for a second look at organic solutions to the handling of solid waste.

Plantex executives recently offered to demonstrate the efficacy of their product, which has been dubbed as an all-in-one solution for a variety of industrial, agricultural and residential applications.

Categorized as a disinfectant, odor eliminator, compost activator and cleaner, Plantex is a dark, golden brown liquid that is non-flammable, non-toxic and biodegradable.

Derived from musa paradisiacal, the product contains sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, esterified fatty acids, alkaloids, saponins, glycosides, enzymes and ionized water.

Shown in demonstrations here, the solution rid pig pens of unpleasant smell, eliminated the stench of urine and sanitized the areas where it was used.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has already vouched for the efficacy of the product, along with the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), Pilotage Trading and Construction, International Farms Corp. and Chevalier Enviro Services, Inc.
