Jewels nip Elasto Painters

SUDDENLY, things are getting brighter for the Montaña Jewels. The Jewels notched their first back-to-back wins after a long while with a 66-63 win over Rain or Shine in a battle of last conference’s finalists in the 2006 PBL Heroes Cup at the San Sebastian Gym in Cavite.

And much like in their previous wins, it was Alex Compton who again delivered the knockout punch, hitting a huge trey at clutch time to turn the table around and improve their record to 3-2.

"It was all heart and I have to credit the boys for not giving up despite trailing most of the way," said coach Robert Sison. "We hope we can play much better in our future games."

In the nightcap, Far Eastern Insurance banked on the heroics of Niño Marquez to finally barge into the win column with a 71-66 win over Granny Goose Tortillos.

Marquez scored five of his 14 points in the final 30 seconds, including a booming trey, to end a four-game losing run. Granny Goose, which won is last three games, slipped to 3-2.

After a slow start, Elasto Painters, who beat the Jewels in the Unity Cup finals last June, took control of the game beginning in the second quarter behind the exploits of Erwin Sta. Maria and Jojo Tangkay. But poor shot selection in the closing minutes of the game did them in.

Rain or Shine was still leading 63-62 until Compton drained a 3-point shot that shocked the Elasto Painters. Visibly shaken, the Elasto Painters failed to buy a single basket in their last four attempts.

The Elasto Painters slipped to 2-2.

Ariel Capus, who was hot in the first half, tallied 16 points while Compton added 9 points.  JR Reyes led Rain or Shine by also scoring 16 points while Tangkay was held to just 13 points.

With Capus at the helm, the Jewels took a 22-19 lead the Elasto Painters came through with several several spurts to take the initiative.
