Mimaropa schools press meet set in Boac Dec. 12-14

BOAC, Marinduque — Some 800 student journalists from public and private elementary and secondary schools in Southern Tagalog-B (also known as Mimaropa) will participate in the 2005 regional schools press conference (RSPC) which the Department of Education (DepEd) has scheduled on Dec. 12-14 at the Marinduque National High School in this capital town.

Dr. Paraluman R. Giron, Mimaropa DepEd director, said the three-day RSPC has the theme, "Responsible and Quality Campus Journalism: Gearing Up to the Challenges of Schools First Initiatives."

Giron said the journalistic gathering will be attended by leading elementary and secondary schools campus scribes, together with their school paper teacher advisers, from the provincial and city schools divisions of Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Calapan, Marinduque, Puerto Princesa, Palawan and Occidental Mindoro.

According to Giron, the RSPC will feature individual writing competitions in news writing, editorial writing, feature writing, sports writing, photojournalism, copyreading and headline writing, and editorial cartooning.

The writing derbies, Giron said, will be presented by professional lectures on various forms of writing by nationally prominent working journalists.

She said the RSPC, will also conduct group contests to determine the region’s top school newspapers, on the basis of their editorial page, feature/ literary page, news page, sports page, and layout page design.

The Mimaropa DepEd chief said the top seven winners in the various individual tilts will represent the region in the forthcoming national schools press conference.
