Malaysian juror faces lifetime ban

A MALAYSIAN juror faces possible lifetime ban in the Southeast Asian Games gymnastics competition for violating the sport’s code of points, Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Noel Buenaventura said on Thursday night.

Buenaventura said Kau Git Kaur, the controversial Malaysian jury who holds an A-1 classification, might have to face the consequence for his action during the men’s artistic gymnastics competition on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Filipino gymnast Roel Ramirez, Indonesian M. Aldilla Akbar and Malaysian Shu Wai Ng ended up tied for first place with identical 8.45 points in the floor exercises on Wednesday. The international jury led by Korean Kim Sung Ho and Chakapou Sriripla then led a five-hour deliberation as to who deserves to earn the gold medal.

But to their surprise, Kau insisted that the three gymnasts be declared all gold medal winners.

Buenaventura said Kau, who served as one of the jury A-1 in the ring, horse vault and the floor exercises, should not have interacted with the Malaysian players and coaching staff, nor should he be contesting the final verdict made by Kim.

"As one of the juries in the men’s artistic competitions, he (Kau) is not allowed to talk to the players and coaches of Malaysia. That’s a clear violation of the code of points as found in chapter 7. Ni hindi niya pinakawalan yung Koreano na international jury natin," Buenaventura said.

The Korean FIG (Federacione Internationale Gymnastics) representative was pestered by Kau moments after the conclusion of the heavy six-event schedule Wednesday afternoon.

"Sabi ng Malaysian na iyon, he’s not going to stop (complaining) until he (Kim) declares a triple-gold winner for the floor exercises. Para matapos na lang, the Korean just gave in, but definitely, he will be making a report on this incident to the FIG," he added.

Buenaventura said will also be filing a separate report at the end of the biennial conclave to the Southeast Asian Gymnastics Federation (SEAGF) to ensure that Kau faces sanctions for his actions.

"He faces possible ban in the future SEA Games and maybe, his Brevet might even be taken away from him," he said.

A Brevet is an international title given to a judge who passed the stringent one-month course where examinations on various disciplines in gymnastics are given.

Meanwhile, the Philippine women’s rhythmic artistic team of Danica Calapatan, Carla Dionisio and Sheryll Contillo finished dead last in the team championship, which ended late Thursday night. Malaysia topped the team event to collar the gold, while Thailand settled for the silver and Vietnam along with Indonesia grabbed the bronze.
