SLMC neurologists top 4th Stroke Research Contest

Dr. Greg David V. Dayrit, a neurologist-internist at St. Luke’s Medical Center, and Dr. Vincent Paul de Guzman, last year’s stroke fellow graduate, won the top two prizes in the recently concluded Stroke Society of the Philippines’ 4th Stroke Research Contest, held at Fort Ilocandia in Laoag City.

Dr. Dayrit’s paper entitled "Predictive factors of poor outcome and mortality among Filipino patients with first-onset Spontaneous Supratentorial Intracerebral Hemorrhage" bagged the top prize. The winning paper, co-authored with St. Luke’s stroke service head Dr. Abdias Aquino, studies the different independent risk factors, clinical profile, prognosis and outcome of patients who developed stroke in the form of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage.

Dr. De Guzman’s paper entitled "Risk factor and outcome among Filipino stroke patients with intracranial stenosis," won second place. The work was co-authored with Dr. Cristina San Jose, and discussed the prevalence of intracranial stenosis and its association with risk factors and outcome.

As the top two prizes in this year’s annual research competition, the doctors received certificates of recognition, a cash award and trophies.

Dr. Dayrit’s paper analyzed more than 200 stroke patients and found out that majority of the Filipino hemorrhagic stroke patients were due to chronic hypertension and vascular malformations.

The study also revealed that advanced age, volume of hemorrhage, level of sensorium and admission Glasgow score were all correlated with poor outcome among hemorrhagic stroke patients.

Dr. De Guzman’s paper meanwhile stressed the value of complete neurovascular evaluation among ischemic stroke patients and that intracranial stenosis was higher in the prevalence than extracranial stenosis among Filipinos.

Last year, Dr. Dayrit was the only Filipino to present his research paper during the 5th World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada. He studied the "Role of the different classes of antihypertensive agents in primary and secondary stroke prevention."

Dr. Dayrit subsequently received recognition as one of the "Young Investigator Physician Awardees" during the same international meeting. He will also be presenting his research paper during the prestigious World Congress of Neurology in Sydney, Australia.
