THE United Republic of Tan-zania celebrates its independence today. This country is located in southeastern Africa, bounded on the north by Kenya and Uganda, on the east by the Indian Ocean, on the south by Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, and on the west by Zaire, Burundi, and Rwanda. The country includes the island of Zanzibar and Pemba and other offshore islands on the Indian Ocean, making it the biggest country in East Africa.
The Republic of Tanganyika in East Africa and the Republic of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanganyika, both of which had recently gained independence, combined themselves into a single nation, the United Republic of Tanzania, on April 26, 1964, with Zanzibar retaining internal self-government. Tanzanian culture is a product of African, Arab, European, and Indian influences.
The economy of Tanzania is primarily agricultural. About 80 percent of the economically active population are engaged in farming, forestry, and fishing. Agricultural products, such as coffee, cotton, and tobacco, account for a significant of annual exports.
The country is rich in natural resources. Diamonds are the most important minerals being exploited in Tanzania, with an annual production of about 200 thousand carats. Large deposits of coal and iron are found in the southern region. Deposits of gold, lead, tin, tungsten, and magnesite abound in other parts of the country.
Economic growth in recent years was largely the result of a rise in industrial production and a substantial increase in output of minerals, led by gold. Oil and gas exploration and development played an important role in this growth. Recent banking reforms have helped increase private sector growth and investment.
Because of distance, the relationship between the Philippines and Tanzania has yet to be enhanced. As raw-material exporters, they have a common interest in improving the terms of trade with industrialized countries. The Philippines can offer technical assistance, while mineralrich Tanzania can extend concessionary prices for its exports.
We congratulate the government and people of Tanzania headed by President Benjamin Mkapa on the occasion of their Independence Day.
