Searching for the exceptional 100

In celebration of their 100th founding anniversary next year, St. Scholastica’s College – Manila (SSC-M) headed by St. Scholastica’s Alumnae Foundation Inc. (SSAFI) is searching for the 100 most outstanding alumnae.

The foundation recently held a lunch meeting at the Trophy Room of the Manila Polo Club in accordance to their solicitation of support from the media. SSAFI is conducting the search for the first time which they believe will inform the public about Scholastican graduates that excelled and obtained fame on their chosen field.

"We are looking for the alumnae who excelled after graduating at St. Scholastica’s College-Manila, who is a true woman of character. This is a way of informing the public that some of the prominent women in our country is a Scholastican," says Ma. Angeles Prats, president of SSAFI.

According to the strict criteria of SSAFI, the outstanding alumnae nominees must possess the qualities that best exemplify the institution. She must have studied in SSC-M for at least four years. One should have upheld the Benedictine values of Ora et Labora (prayer and work), and must possess good moral character.

Also, she should also meet two or more of the following criteria. First, upholding exemplary service to the Filipino nation that redounds to the welfare of the citizenry. Second, consistent involvement in socio-civic, educational, cultural, sport, religious, or environmental concern. Third, an exceptional record in her chosen filed of service while maintaining a balance in her own state of life. Fourth, must have received awards from prestigious national or international organizations. And lastly being an outstanding leadership in her professional or voluntary endeavors.

Apart from the search, according to Louie Paraan, Chairman of the SSC centennial committee, "This is a yearlong celebration starting September of this year and ending December of next year. We have many activities in store, there are minor and major activities each month." SSC-M is not only celebrating their own anniversary but as the Manila Priory as well, which is also commemorating their centennial.

Included in the long line-up of activities, the celebration is also in pursuit of the "Boys of Mother Gratia". Contrary to what people know that SSC is an exclusive school for girls they also cater to boys. They are searching for the little boys that were either brothers of Scholasticans then in school, or sons of diehard Scholasticans. Who felt that having no daughter to give their Alma Mater, they would at least give, their sons one or two years of a German Benedictine education by enrolling them in the school’s kindergarten classes.
