Question: I know that system security is very much the question in the back of every PC owner's mind. I would like to ask for your opinion as to what anti virus program should I buy. Among my friends their top pick was McAfee while others chose Norton. How about your preference? It is a fact that buying original programs costs a little over 2 thousand pesos, that is why I am asking for your preference in this matter. It would be very much appreciated. Thank you and God bless! - K.Y. Murillo.
Answer: The most important thing to remember with regards to anti-virus program is to keep your virus list up-to-date. Anti-Virus detects and clean viruses based on what is included on the list. If a new virus is not part of its virus list, then you are as vulnerable as those systems with no anti-virus program installed.

Question: I live in Cebu City, and have Compaq Presario 1200 laptop, 110 volts (A-C), from U.S. A guy, not an expert, told me my hard drive was broke. Do you know anyone here reliable, and honest to work on it? It's under warranty in U.S., but to ship back and forth is very expensive. What do you suggest? As you can tell, I'm new at computers. Thanks. - David Hall.
Answer: Compaq is now with Hewlett Packard. Bring your notebook to any HP accredited service centers and they will definitely help you fix your problem because of their international warranty program. I am sure you can find one there in Cebu. You may want to try to call HP Philippines as well for some assistance.

Question: A friend of mine informed me that she received an email from me and it has a virus. Problem is I didn't send any email to her. Does this mean my PC has a virus, or did it came from somewhere else? My PC is protected by a virus protection program. Many thanks. - Pam Ilagan.
Answer: There is a possibility that your PC is infected by a virus, but if your anti-virus program is up-to-date then most likely there is no virus on your computer. Another possibility is that a someone else's PC you both know has a virus, and the emails are coming from that person. The email your friend received is called a "rogue email", an email that bear official looking subject lines and claim to be from someone you know. This is how viruses often spread, the chances a victim will open the attachment is high since they thought it came from a person known to them.

Question: After deleting a program in the computer, a window keeps appearing whenever I start the computer. The window says (problem with shortcut, drive or connection, that the shortcut is unavailable). Is there a way to remove this box that keeps appearing? More power to Technews! - Ronald.
Answer: The program that you deleted must be a program executed during startup. All you need to do is to delete the shortcut icon in your startup folder. Right click on your Start button and choose Explore. Double click the Program folder and then double click the StartUp folder. Delete the shortcut icon of the program you have deleted and your problem is solved.
