ILOILO CITY (PNA) — The rising incidence of abortion in the country is alarming and should be addressed by the government.
The Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP) cited a study on "The Incidence of Induced Abortion in the Philippines: Current Level and Recent Trends" by the Alan Guttmacher Institute conducted from 2002 to 2005 which estimated that the number of induced abortions has now reached 473,408 cases in 2000 alone.
Further, around 139,453 cases were estimated to be in the National Capital Region, and 204,105 in the rest of Luzon areas. Cases in Visayas were recorded at 56,022 and Mindanao had 73,427 abortion cases.
Rey Carmelo P. Remonde, Advocacy and Resource Mobilization Specialist of the FPOP, said another study was conducted on abortion cases in Negros Occidental and Iloilo provinces where it was found out that most of those who committed abortion were lactating mothers.
Remonde said an expanded study found out that lactating mothers believed they would not get pregnant on the first six months of the lactating period.
At the same time, he said that during their dialogue with lactating mothers, they were informed that the women lack access in terms of information. "There has to be prevention of abortion which is correlated to our access to information," he said.
